Principal Bioinformatics Software Engineer (Rust) Long Term Contract Remote

Optomi, in partnership with a leading scientific research organization, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer with expertise in Rust to help shape the future of an open workflow computation engine. Youll play a key role in closing the gap between what the application is today and what it can become, working across multiple open-source projects to advance both the engine itself and the global specifications it depends on. This is a long-term, renewing contract with full benefits included.

Experience of the right candidate:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 4+ years in Rust
  • Proven experience leading or contributing to medium- to large-scale open-source projects
  • Familiarity with GitHub for project planning and workflow management
  • Experience with API design and developing specifications with OpenAPI/Swagger
  • Background in workflow execution, scientific computing, or HPC environments (preferred)

We will be putting a high emphasis on:

  • Strong Rust development skills for both tooling and specification-driven work
  • Contributing to Rust crates for processing and executing WDL documents
  • Ability to collaborate with global standards bodies and open-source communities
  • Balancing coding, architectural design, and specification authoring
  • Contributing to projects that will directly enable groundbreaking scientific research
