An interview is a nerve-wracking time as we sit there trying to answer questions in a way that will get us that job offer. It seems like the wrong word or gesture could get you out of the running. One of the biggest hurdles is how to answer, “What are your salary expectations?” You want to answer this the right way to solidify your candidacy.

Quoting a salary range gives recruiters some space to work with. It also shows your prospective employer that you’ve done your homework and have a working knowledge of the industry as well as your own worth.

Say something along the lines of, “I’d appreciate it if you could tell me what’s the range for such a role.” Often, recruiters also respond with a range rather than a number. If you think they’re quoting way less, you can ask them if they’re excluding benefits, bonuses, etc. to show what you think of the sum.
Buy Some Time
If you haven’t had the time to figure out how to answer, “What are your salary expectations?”, you can simply delay answering. You can tell the recruiter that while salary is important, you want to focus on the job prospects, company culture, career growth/path for now. This is better employed for the first round of the interview process. If you’re close to the end, you should be ready to quote something.
