D. E. Shaw Research seeks a highly qualified lawyer to advise on and help shape the groups ongoing efforts applying machine learning to drug discovery, biomolecular simulation, and biophysics. The person in this role will work closely with our team of world-class scientists and engineers facilitating groundbreaking contributions in science, technology, and drug discovery. Responsibilities will include:

• Identifying and mitigating risks, defining policies, and establishing and maintaining best practices for our artificial intelligence and machine learning work, including in the intellectual property, regulatory, data usage and privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance spaces.
• Negotiating, drafting, and reviewing a broad range of contracts, including agreements relating to our artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives.
• Advising on the structure of transactions related to our artificial intelligence and machine learning efforts.
• Counseling company leadership on legal and business issues as they arise.

This position will involve working independently as well as with other internal legal professionals and with outside counsel from a variety of practice areas. Successful candidates will have meticulous attention to detail, as well as exceptional writing, communication, analytical, and project management skills. Expertise in the rapidly evolving legal landscape impacting artificial intelligence and machine learning is required, and in-house experience at a technology company is strongly preferred.

D. E. Shaw Research (DESRES), based in New York City, develops and uses advanced computational technologies to understand the behavior of biologically and pharmaceutically significant molecules at an atomic level of detail, and to design precisely targeted, highly selective drugs for the treatment of various diseases. Among its core technologies is ANTON, a proprietary special-purpose supercomputer that DESRES designed and constructed to vastly accelerate the process of molecular dynamics simulation. The expected annual base salary for this position is $350,000$600,000. Our compensation package also includes variable compensation in the form of sign-on and year-end bonuses, and generous benefits, including relocation and immigration assistance. The applicable annual base salary paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors including the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background. We follow a hybrid work schedule, in which employees work from the office on Tuesday through Thursday, and have the option of working from home on Monday and Friday.
