The Math, Stats, and Data Science group is looking for a mid-career scientist with a background in data science, mathematics, and domain science to contribute to interdisciplinary projects bringing together material science, earth systems modeling, and with statistics, data science, and analytics.


Data science at PNNL addresses critical national and global issues by applying scientific, mathematical, and engineering techniques to mission-focused data and challenges. This position requires thought leadership and technical depth to support the development and advancement of data science for experimental measurement and monitoring research and capabilities.

General responsibilities of our mid-career data scientists include:

+ Designing, developing, and implementing methods, processes, and systems to analyze diverse data. Applies knowledge of statistics, mathematics, and machine learning to integrate and prepare data

+ Designing, developing, and evaluating models and algorithms that lead to optimal value extraction from data

+ Demonstrating ability to transfer skills across application domains

+ Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams

+ Participate and lead proposal development

The successful candidate will have experience with:

+ Developing numerical approximation algorithms

+ Stochastic Methods for numerical climate simulation

+ Design of mathematical models for nondestructive ultra-sonic testing

+ Experience using and developing for HPC systems

+ Deep learning for analysis of experimental data, including statistical representations of training data distribution


Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-

+ MS/MA -OR-

+ PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

+ PhD in mathematics, statistics, or related field

+ Experience applying theory and developing technical approaches with minimal oversight

+ Ability to effectively team with a diverse group of scientist and engineers from mathematics, statistics, and other domain science backgrounds to develop creative solutions to complex problems

+ Effectively communicate complex mathematical and statistical methods and approaches to scientists and engineers from other domains as well as key stakeholders with limited statistics background

+ Broad but thorough understanding of mathematical and statistical methods used in radiography, tomography, and materials applications and ability to adapt statistical methods to fit small sample problems.

+ Experience developing and writing proposals
