Job Description

The Geospatial Data Science (GDS) Group in NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis Center is seeking a mid- to senior-level software developer who will build JavaScript (JS) based full-stack applications in a serverless Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. The GDS group leads modeling and visualization research at the intersection of renewable energy deployment, geospatial technologies, big data science, and application development. Inside the GDS group, the OpenCarto and Visualization Analysis Design Research (OC-VADR) team operates in an agile environment and brings together Product Managers, UX/UI Designers and an experienced group of full-stack web developers and software architects to build custom web-based applications. The team designs, develops and deploys innovative applications and software to help solve real-world energy system problems. The end products enhance NREL research and analysis through interactive visualizations paired with the flexibility of modern web design practices, empowering the users to understand complex data and make informed decisions.

The team's scope of work serves a diverse range of stakeholders both within NREL and external to the laboratory.

As our Software Developer, you will participate in a team environment with structured development lifecycles, as follows: analyze and define system requirements, perform system/application design, develop capability prototypes, develop, and implement operational systems, conduct unit and integration testing of application modules. You will help develop analysis and visualization frameworks to address problems that are inherently spatiotemporal in resource availability, energy distribution networks, and energy demand scenarios. Candidates should be interested in working in an interdisciplinary field, together with computer scientists, policy analysts, and data engineers, which will require excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Duties will include :

  • Work internally with product managers, developers, designers, and data scientists
  • Work across all layers of code while maintaining a solid understanding of the architecture
  • Design and implement new features and maintain and debug existing ones
  • Stay up to date on emerging technologies
  • Integrate data from back-end services, databases, and APIs
  • Contribute and follow quality assurance procedures and documentation.
  • Test and evaluate new applications
  • Deploy and monitor the application suite

Basic Qualifications

This position will be hired at level III or level IV.

Level IV:
PhD in Computer Science or Engineering and 4 or more years of related technical experience. Or, Master's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and 7 or more years of related technical experience. Or, Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and 9 or more years of related technical experience . Applies extensive engineering technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Level III:
PhD in Computer Science or Engineering. Or, Master's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and 3 or more years of related technical experience . Or, Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and 5 or more years of related technical experience. Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.


Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, preferably within the React JavaScript framework
  • Experience working with Node.JS
  • Familiarity with continuous-integration tools and patterns
  • Familiarity with serverless architecture, tools, and patterns
  • Experience in a Unix/Linux environment
  • Follows best coding practices, including peer code reviews and unit and integration tests
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies
  • Experience in team and/or technical leadership role

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience creating efficient, scalable web interfaces
  • Experience in JS visualization libraries, with preference for Mapbox, Chart.js, and DECK.GL
  • Understanding of web services technologies such HTTP and REST
  • Experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, and AWS IoT
  • Genuine excitement about web application technology, have a strong interest in learning about and exploring the latest technologies, and exceptional skills in building compelling web applications and UI’s
  • Passion for building new products in a fast paced, team-oriented environment
  • Entrepreneurial spirit: not afraid to invent and try new things, take calculated risk
  • Active participation in team Agile activities such as story grooming, planning work backlog, work estimation, sprint planning, retros, demos, etc.


Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $90,600 - $163,100

Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $75,500 - $135,900

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
